Commentary

Rejecting the doctrine of Karma, Divine Grace and other factors in their achievements and believing them to be due entirely to personal efforts, they are confounded by many goal oriented projects — and in this way they are ensnared by the net of delusion.

ātma-saṃbhāvitāḥ stabdhā dhana-māna-madānvitāḥ |
yajante nāma yajñāis-te daṃbhenāvidhi pūrvakam || 17 ||

17. Self-conceited, complacent, intoxicated with pride and wealth, they perform sacrifices in name
only with ostentation and contrary to the injunctions of the Śāstras.
