CHAPTER 1
The Hesitation and Despondency of Arjuna

32. na kankse vijayam krsna
na ca rajyam sukhani ca
kith no rajyena govinda
kith bhogair jivitena va

(32) I do not long for victory, 0 Krsna, nor kingdom nor pleasures. Of what use is kingdom to us, 0 Krsna, or enjoyment or even life?
In moments of great sorrow we are tempted to adopt the method of renunciation.
This verse indicates Arjuna's inclination for renunciation of the world : samnyasasadhanasucanam. Madhusudana.

33. yesam arthe kanksitam no
rajyam bhogah sukhani ca
to ime 'vasthita yuddhe
pranams tyaktva dhanani ca

(33) Those for whose sake we desire kingdom, enjoyments and pleasures, they stand here in battle, renouncing heir lives and riches

34. acaryah pitarah putras
tathai 'va ca pitamahah matulah
svagurah pautrah syalah
sambandhinas tatha

(34) Teachers, fathers, sons and also grandfathers; uncles and fathers-in-law, grandsons and brothers-in-law and (other) kinsmen.

35. etan na hantuam icchami ghnato
'pi madhusudana api
trailokyarajyasya
hetoh kim nu mahikrte

(35) These I would not consent to kill, though they kill me, 0 Madhusudana (Krsna), even for the kingdom of the three worlds ; how much less for the sake of the earth?
The three worlds refer to the Vedic idea of earth, heaven and atmosphere (antariksa).
