which are needed for the baremaintenance of the body, without even the attachment 'I amdoing (this)'-which is signified by the use of the word 'mere '-he docs not incur evil. Because such a person is incapable ofacquiring evil called sin, he does not fall into the evil of samsāra; he is surely liberated without any impediment, because all hisactions have been consumed by the fire of Knowledge. This is merely a reiteration of the fruit of right Knowledge already described (IV.On this interpretation, the phrase 'merebodily action' gives no room to objection.

For the ascetic who has relinquished all possessions, there isno question of owning food and other things'[1] required for themaintenance of the body and it would follow that the maintenanceof the body has to be done by begging or such other means. TheLord expounds the means of meeting with food and other thingsnecessary for the mainteance of his body by the ascetic, as areauthorised by scriptural texts such as: 'what is unsolicited, what isnot previously arranged for, what comes to him by chanc'[2]-

Yadrcchā-lābha-santusto dwndvāWo vimatsarah
Samah siddhāvasiddhau ca krtvāpi na nibadhyate

22. Content with what comes to him by chance,having transcended the pairs of opposites, free fromenvy, even-minded in success and failure, thoughacting he is not bound.
