Sraddhaa-Traya-Vibhaga Yogah

(THE MODE OF DIVISION OF THE THREE KINDS OF FAITH)


From the Lord's words, "So, let the Śāstra be your authority"[1] finding an occasion for (further) questioning[2],

Arjuna uvāca-
Ye śāstra-vidhitn-utsrjya yajante śraddhayānvitāh
Tesām nisthā tu kā Kfsna sattvam-āho rajas-tamah
Arjuna said-

1. Those who, setting aside the ordinance of the Śāstra, worship with iraddhā (faith),-what is the condition of them, 0 Krsna? (Is it) sattva, or rajas, or tamast Those, i.e. the ordinary men, who, setting aside, letting alone, the ordinance of the Śāstra, the procedure enjoined by Scriptures, the Śruti and the Smtti, worship with iraddha, adore the gods and others with faith, with belief in God and another world beyond:-

Now, Arjuna proceeds to question, with a view to knowing the fate of believers who are not acquainted with the Scriptures. (A)
