Safijaya uvacq—
Tain tathā krpayā(ā)vistam-aśru-pftfnākuleksanam
Visīclantain-idam vākyain-uvāca Madhusūdanah
Sañjaya said—

1. Madhusūdana addressed in these words, him (Arjuna) who was thus overpowered by compassion, whose eyes were filled with tears, and agitated, and who was dispirited—

śri Bhagavān uvāca—
Kulas-tvā kaśmalam-idam visame samupasthitam
Anārya-justam^margyam-akīrti-karam-Arjima
The Blessed Lord said—

2. Where from has this dejection of spirit—so un­becoming of noble persons, barring them from heaven, and inglorious—befallen you at this perilous moment, O Arjuna?
