Urging The Enemy’s Destruction

अर्जुन उवाच
अथ केन प्रयुक्तोऽयं पापं चरति पूरुष:।
अनिच्छन्नपि वार्ष्णेय बलादिव नियोजित:॥36॥

[ “Arjun said, ‘What, O Varshneya (Krishn), is that which drives man, forced against his will as it were and with reluctance, to act impiously?’ ’’]

Why does a man, although like one who is dragged to something which he despises, act in sinful ways? Why does he not conduct himself according to the precepts laid down by Krishn? Krishn’s answer to the question is provided in the following verse.

श्रीभगवानुवाच
काम एष क्रोध एष रजोगुणसमुद्भव:।
महाशनो महापाप्मा विद्ध्येनमिह वैरिणम्॥37॥

[ “The Lord said, ‘Know that desire arising out of the emotional property of nature (rajas) and insatiable as fire is the same as wrath; and learn to recognize it as your most wicked enemy in this world.’ ’’ ]
