CHAPTER 8
Yog With The Imperishable God

At the end of Chapter 7, Krishn said that yogi who do pious deeds are released from all sin and know the all-pervading God. So action is something that brings knowledge of the Supreme Spirit. They who do it know him (Krishn) along with the omnipresent God- the adhidaiv, adhibhoot, adhiyagya, perfect action and Adhyatma[1]. So action is that which apprises us of them. Men who know them are aware, at the end, of Krishn alone, and this knowledge is never blotted out. Repeating Krishn’s own words Arjun raises a question :

अर्जुन उवाच
किं तद्ब्रह्रा किमध्यात्मं किं कर्म पुरुषोत्तम्।
अधिभूतं च किं प्रोक्तमधिदैवं किमुच्यते ॥1॥

[ “Arjun said, Enlighten me, O Supreme Being, on the nature of Brahm, adhyatm, action, adhibhoot and adhidaiv.’’ ]

The words adhyatm, action, adhibhoot and adhidaiv are all mysteries to Arjun and he wishes to be enlightened on them.
