Raas Leela

Maharaas or Raas Leela is part of the traditional story of Krishna described in Hindu scriptures such as the Bhagavata Purana and literature such as the Gita Govinda, where he dances with Radha and her sakhis.

In modern times, Rasa lila has become a popular theme in Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Manipuri and Kuchipudi items. Ras lila is a popular form of folk theatre in the regions of Mathura, Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, especially during the festivals of Krishna Janmashtami and Holi, and amongst various followers of Gaudiya Vaishnavism in the region. Raas leela(Rasa lila) is also observed as one of the National Festivals of Assam.[1]

Maharaas is a spiritual dance where lord Krishna replicated himself and perform with each Gopiya’s individually. Raaslila is the combination of lot of leela’s that lord Krishna made in his childhood. Five thousand years ago, when lord Krishna was only eight years old boy he moved gokul to vrindavan and he becomes immensely popular in all Vrindavan Folk’s. It was a time of Purnima (full moon night) all gopi’s and gopiya’s gathered at bank of Yamuna and started play and fun with river water, after some moments the play converted to Dance, but some time later they are clumsier one by one slowly. Lord Krishna is sitting in a branch of Tree and he saw that and took his flute and started play, the sound of flute was very entrancing that all gopiya’s and gopi’s are gathered around him and once again start dancing. It’s the start of Lord Krishna “Raas Leela” where he connected all gopiya’s and gopi’s to himself just with a flute.[2]

In Raasleela, lord Krishna is only look like a Man, and all peoples who participate with maharaas look like a women. Once Lord Shiva who is the God of Dance, Listen about this SHRI Krishna– who is just a little boy yet – Maharaas, he come from Himalaya’s to Vrindavan and reachd to bank of Yamuna and ask to a boatman “I want to see Raasleela that is playing by little boy krishna”, the boatman replied him, “You cannot see raas in this getup, need to change your getup as a woman and you must need to wear woman’s clothing” after that you can see Lord Krishna MahaRaas, lord shiva become a gopi’s and then go to see Supreme of God MahaRaas.
