CHAPTER 18
The Yog of Renunciation

पृथक्त्वेन तु यज्ज्ञानं नानाभावान्पृग्विधान् ।
वेत्ति सर्वेषु भूतेषु तज्ज्ञानं विद्धि राजसम् ॥21॥

[ “Know that knowledge as tainted by passion by which one perceives divided entities in all separate beings.’’ ]

यत्तु कृत्स्नवदेकस्मिन्कार्ये सक्तमहैतुकम् ।
अतत्त्वार्थवदल्पं च तत्तामसमुदाहृतम् ॥22॥

[ “And know that knowledge as besmirched by ignorance (tamas) which adheres to the body alone as if it were the whole truth, and which is irrational, unfounded on truth, and petty.’’ ]

Devoid of wisdom and the required discipline to buttress it, this kind of knowledge is worthless as it takes one away from awareness of God who is the one and only reality. The following verses then recount the three kinds of action.
