Chapter-16
The Divine and Demoniacal Natures

Now I shall tell you the characteristics of ignorance (241-245).

Just as a rock does not feel cold or hot or a person blind from birth does not know day from night or the fire does not know what it should consume and what not, or the philosopher’s stone does not distinguish between iron and gold or a ladle does not know the taste of juices in which it is dipped or the wind does not know the difference between a highway and a by-path, so he is blind to good and bad actions. Just as a child puts anything in its mouth, without knowing whether it is good or bad (246-250),

he consumes the hotchpotch of merit and sin without knowing whether it is bitter or sweet. There is no doubt that this state of mind, is ignorance. Thus I have explained to you the six faults, which have given strength to the demoniacal endowment. Even if the viper is tiny, its poison is deadly. Even if the fires, namely worldconflagration at the time of dissolution, fire of lightning and the sub-marine fire are only three in number, the world is not sufficient for a ritual offering to them. When one suffers from the derangement of the three humours of the body (phlegm, wind and bile), one cannot escape death, even if he seeks the protection of god Brahma.
