Chapter V

Arjuna said--O Krsna, You commend renunciation of action viz., 'Sankhyayoga, and the performance of the Yoga (discipline of action). Tell me which of the two is decidedly better?

Sri Bhagavan said—The Yoga of knowledge (Sankhyayoga) (renunciation of actions) and the Yoga of action both lead to the supreme bliss. Of the two the Yoga of Action is superior w the Yoga of knowledge.(1)

Why is Yoga of action superior?

The Karmayogi, who neither hates nor desires, should be ever considered a Samnyãsi (renouncer); for being free from the pairs of opposites, he is easily set free from worldly-bondage.(2)

You said "Both lead to the supreme bliss." Is there no difference in their fruit?

It is the ignorant (children) not the wise, who say that Sãnkhyayoga and Karmayoga are different. For one, who is firmly established in either, gets the fruit of both. The supreme state reached by the Sãnkhayayogi is also attained by the Karmayogi. Therefore he, who sees Sãnkhyayoga and Karmayoga as one, so far as their result goes, really sees.(3)

When their result is the same, how is then the Yoga of action superior?

O mighty-armed. without Karmayoga viz., without remaining the same in success and failure, however Sãnkhyayoga is difficult to attain. But the meditative Karmayogi (by becoming equanimous in success and failure) quickly attains Brahma (Eternal) in the form of equanimity.(4-5)
