Atra śūrā mahesvāsā Bhīmārjima-samd yudhi
Yuyudhāno Virātaśca Drupadaśca mohā-rathah

4. " In this (army) are heroes—mighty bowmen, equal in combat to Bhima and Arjuna—(viz.) Yuyudhāna"[1] and Virata,[2] and Drupada,"[3] the great warrior-chief";[4]

Dhrstaketuś-cekitānah KāśirājāSca viryavān
Purujit-Kwtibhojaśca Śaibyaśca nara-puñgavah

5. "Dhrstaketu,[5] Cekitāna,"[6] and the King[7] of Kāśi, possessed of valour; Purujit"[8] and Kuntibhoja,[8] and Śaibya,15[9] the foremost of men;

Yudhāmanyuica vikrantci Uttamaujāśca nryavān
Saubhadro Draupadeyāśca sarva eva mahārathāh

6. " And Yudhāmanyu,"'[10] the overpowering ; and Uttamauja,"[10] the valiant; the son[11] of Subhadrā and the sons[12] of Draupadī—all of them great warriorchiefs.

  1. Sātyaki. son of Śini (a Yādava chieftain) and a disciple of Arjuna. U>^ was counted as an ali-ratha—i.e., an unrivalled warrior, fighting from his chariot and capable of engaging single-handed any number of foes (amitān yodhayet yastusa piokto - atirothah).
  2. Father of IJttarā. who was married to Arjuna's son Abhimanyu, and of Śvela the first commander-in-chief of the Pāpdava army.
  3. King of the Pañcālas and father of DraupadI, wife of the Pāndavas.
  4. Mahā-rathah : a warrior fighting from his chariot, who can engage in battle ten thousand archers and is well-versed in the science of arms, (eko daki-sahasrāni yodhayet ymtu dhamiiuim, śastra-iāstra-pravipaśca).
  5. Son of Śiśupāla, king of Cedi.
  6. A Yādava hero belonging to the Vrsni clan (to which fc Krsna also belonged) and commander of one of the seven akfiuMpis of the Pāndava host. (An akmhini is a division of army consisting of 21870 chariots, as many elephants, 65610 horses and 109350 foot-soldiers).
  7. His name is mentioned in the MB. as AbhibhQ.
  8. 8.0 8.1 Both were brothers of Kuntl, the mother of the Pāndavas.
  9. Father of Devikā, wife of Yudhis«ia, the eldest of the Pānrjavas. He was noted for Iris heroism in battle as well as for his virtuous character.
  10. 10.0 10.1 were brothers and princes of PaftCāla territory. They fought with valour through the eighteen days of the war and were slain in the night, while asleep, by Aśvatthāmā, son of Drona and friend of Duryodhana.
  11. Abhimanyu, Arjuna's son by SubhadrS, the Lord's sister. He was over­ powered by several mahā-rathas of the Kaurava army against all rules of righteous warfare and killed on the thirteenth day of the war.
  12. Prativindhya, Srutasoma, Srutakarma, śatānlka, and śrmasena. res­ pectively the sons of the five Pāndavas. All of them were butchered in the night by Aśvatlhamā, after the end of the war.
